Traveling to Goddard Space Flight Center

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center is physically located in Greenbelt, which is a few miles to the north-east of Washington, D.C. The physical address for the facility is 8800 Greenbelt Rd., Greenbelt, Md., 20771: See map.

NASA Goddard is a controlled access facility; participants will have to report to the main gate on Greenbelt Road on the first workshop day in order to collect their access badges. The workshop itself will be taking place in Building 34, room W150.

Traveling by Air and Car

The Washington D.C. area is served by three major airports. These are:

Below are driving directions to Goddard from each of these airports:

From Baltimore Washington International (BWI) Airport:

Follow the exit road out of BWI Airport and follow the signs for the Baltimore Washington Parkway, Rt. 295 towards Washington. You will be on 295 for approximately 20-30 minutes. Take the Rt. 193-Greenbelt Road/ College Park/ NASA Goddard Exit. At the first traffic light, make a left onto Southway. Make another left at the next light onto Greenbelt Road. Follow Greenbelt Road for approximately two miles. The NASA main gate will be on your left just after you pass Cipriano Road.

From Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA):

Leaving the airport, you will be on the George Washington Memorial Parkway North. Bear to the right onto 395 North. You will go over the 14 the Street bridge, continue to follow signs for 395 North, following signs for I-295 North (Baltimore Washington Parkway). Stay on 295 North for approximately 5 miles and take the exit for Greenbelt Road (this is just after the exits for I-95). Make a left at the stoplight. This will be Greenbelt Road (Rt. 193). Follow Greenbelt Road for approximately 2 miles. The NASA main gate will be on your left just after you pass Cipriano Road.

From Dulles International Airport (IAD):

Follow the Dulles Access Road to I-495. Take the first access ramp for Baltimore/Silver Spring/Bethesda. Stay on I-495 for approximately 45 minutes. Take exit 23 (Kenilworth Avenue), when exiting you will bear to the right. Proceed to the light following signs for Greenbelt Road (193). Make a left at the traffic light onto Greenbelt Road. Follow Greenbelt Road for approximately 3 miles. The NASA main gate will be on your left just after you pass Cipriano Road.

Traveling by Air and Public Transport

Goddard Space Flight Center can be reached by public transport. The Washington D.C. metro system serves large parts of the capital and some of the surrounding areas.

Reaching the metro system from From Baltimore Washington International (BWI) Airport:

The B30 bus is available from BWI airport and runs regularly between the airport and the Greenbelt Metro station, which is on the Green line. This is the closest metro station to NASA Goddard and to the Holiday Inn (see below).

Reaching the metro system from Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA):

Ronald Reagan National Airport has it’s own stop on the Yellow line of the DC metro system. To reach NASA Goddard or the Holiday Inn from here, take the Yellow line north. If required, change to the Green line to continue northwards. The destination stop is Greenbelt Metro station (see below).

Reaching the metro system from Dulles International Airport (IAD):

Dulles International Airport is the furthest from the DC area and NASA Goddard. You can connect to the DC metro system via the 5A bus, which runs from Dulles and stops at two metro locations in DC. These are Rosslyn, and L’enfant Plaza. The journey takes approximately 1 hour. To reach NASA Goddard or the Holiday Inn, it is recommended to travel to L’enfant Plaza station. From here, take the Green metro line northbound. The destination stop is Greenbelt Metro station (see below).

Goddard Space Flight Center

The closest stop to Goddard is the Greenbelt station, which is at the northern end of the Green Metro line. From there you can take the G14 or 15x buses, which both stop directly outside the NASA main gate. The 15x is a much faster but limited express service for Goddard staff that only runs at certain times of the day.

Alternatively, there is a large taxi bank outside Greenbelt Metro station. A taxi from the station to the NASA Goddard main gate will cost approximately $15 - 20.

The Holiday Inn

The Holiday Inn (Greenbelt) is located at 7200 Hanover Drive, Greenbelt, MD, and may also be reached via public transport. The closest metro station stop is Greenbelt, which is at the northern end of the Green line. From here, the Holiday Inn offers a free shuttle service to their hotel, which is obtained by calling the hotel itself. The front desk number is: 301-982 7000; see http://www.holidayinn.com/hotels/us/en/greenbelt/wasgb/hoteldetail for more details.

Alternatively, there is a large taxi bank outside Greenbelt Metro station. A taxi from the station to the hotel will cost approximately $10 - 15.
