Galactic Gamma Ray Sources: Microquasars and New Transients

Marco Tavani, INAF and University of Tor Vergata, Rome

Abstract:

AGILE is ideal for the study of time variable sources because of its gamma-ray and hard X-ray co-aligned imagers. AGILE provides a semi-continuous monitoring (14 times a day) of sources within its FOV (2.5 sr) with good daily exposure at energies near 100 MeV. We summarize the main results of more than 2 years of Galactic source observations: the discovery of a pattern of transient and repetitive gamma-ray emission from the microquasar Cygnus X-3, the results for other microquasar and X-ray binary monitoring, the discovery of a newclass of unidentified gamma-ray transients near theGalactic plane (which are mostly detected near 100 MeV and not associated with strong hard X-ray outbursts). These results lead to substantially revised theoretical models of the high energy emission from Galactic sources.
