Abstract:

Above tens of GeV, gamma-ray observations with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) can be dominated by statistical uncertainties due to the low flux of sources and the limited acceptance. We have developed a new event class which can improve the acceptance: "Calorimeter-only (CalOnly)". The LAT has three detectors: the tracker (TKR), the calorimeter (CAL) and the anti-coincidence detector (ACD). While the conventional event classes require information from the tracker, the CalOnly event class can be used even if there is no usable tracker information. Although CalOnly events have poor angular resolution relative to those which have tracker information, potentially they can be useful for line searches for dark matter, transient analyses, and statistics limited analyses. CalOnly events comprise a significant fraction of the LAT data, however the lack of tracker information causes an additional difficulty in background rejection. We will present the current status.
