Assessing the short-timescale variability in LAT blazars

Abstract:

The fastest AGN flares seen by the Fermi-LAT show timescales comparable to the orbiting period. Due to the LAT discontinuous exposure pattern, fixed-binning light curves are not fully suitable to assess these shortest timescales properly. A method based on an unbinned maximum-likelihood procedure where a time-dependent function is fitted to the data taking into account the time-dependent LAT exposure rate is presented. Examples of application on bright flares are given.
