Energy-Dependent Analysis of Unresolved Point Sources in the Inner Galaxy

Abstract:

In this talk I will present results from a novel analysis technique for the spectrum of unresolved point-sources in the Inner Galaxy. The analysis generalizes recent work characterizing unresolved point sources through non-Poissonian photon-count statistics by also incorporating spectral information into the template fit. Using this method, I will show that we recover the correct spectrum for the disk-correlated PS population near the Galactic plane. In the Inner Galaxy, we find evidence for a new spherically-distributed PS population with a spectrum similar to that of the GeV excess. Thus, this work appears to add support to the point-source explanation of the GeV excess. I will also discuss work validating the new spectral technique and identifying potential shortcomings and systematics using Monte Carlo-generated data.
