Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope

Future Science from Gamma-ray Observations of Neutron Star Mergers

Eric Burns

Abstract:

Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo have opened the new era of gravitational wave astronomy. Neutron star mergers are the canonical multimessenger sources, where combining gravitational and electromagnetic observations enable science impossible through any other means. Gamma-ray observations are key to maximizing the scientific return from these cataclysmic events. We will discuss the knowledge that can be enabled with joint Fermi-GBM and LIGO/Virgo observations, including fundamental physics, cosmology, and the heavy element enrichment history of the universe.
