Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope

Synergies between Fermi and the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Abstract:

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at energies above 20 GeV. Due to begin scientific observations in the early 2020s, CTA will provide up to an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity as compared to current systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. In this talk I will illustrate how Fermi observations have been contributing to shape the scientific objectives and define the observation strategies for CTA. I will also discuss synergies anticipated over the coming years, with Fermi bringing forth a reservoir of targets for in-depth studies with CTA, supplying triggers for time-domain observations, and complementing CTA to provide the broadband spectral coverage necessary to identify the physical mechanisms of very-high-energy gamma-ray sources.
