WG 2 -- Galactic & Unidentified Sources

LAT Collaboration Meeting, 23 - 25 October 2002 -- Draft Agenda

Wednesday, October 23

1:45-2:15 News
1:45:2:00: report and discussion on the Wiki site (P. Nolan, I. Grenier, D. Thomson)
2:00:2:15: report on source variability estimates (P. Nolan)
2:15:2:30: report on pulsar population studies for unidentified EGRET sources (C. Perrot)
2:30:2:45: report on wavelet source detection with EGRET (R. Terrier & I. Grenier)

2:45-3:30 Observation simulator tools -- WG 2
  • Source confusion -- closely packed sources at low as well as at high latitudes
  • Souce/IS clump discrimination -- interstellar clumps and sources in a complex (Cyg_like) region
  • Position biases -- sources with different spectra on a steep background slope
  • Pulsar physics -- pulsar lightcurve with spectral variations with phase
  • Period folding & blind period search -- pulsar lightcurve with a known ephemeris
  • Extended/Point-like source discrimination -- an extended SNR with a smaller perion nebula and a pulsating pulsar
  • Sensitivity to variability -- A transient source at low and high latitudes

3:30-4:00 Identification Tool

Discussion on the tool that should assess the identification probability of a GLAST source with known counterparts at other wavelengths.

Thursday, October 24

8:45-9:45 Scientific Updates -- WG 1 and WG 2 Joint Session

  • Pulsar searches in EGRET error boxes - Harding
  • Sources and propagation of TeV electrons - Grenier

9:45-12:00, Science Tools Discussions -- WG 1 and WG 2 Joint Session

Interstellar Emission Model

  • Considerations from GMULT & GBIAS maps from EGRET analysis - Hunter
  • Interdisciplinary meeting for evaluating the gas and radiation distributions in the Milky Way - Grenier
  • Discussion of issues, e.g., - All
    1. Inputs and outputs, plus adjustable parameters for the model
    2. Distinguishing between the model to be provided for standard LAT point source analysis and one used for investigating the diffuse emission itself (outside of the standard analysis environment)

Observation Simulator Modules

  • Discussion of issues, e.g. - All
    1. What specific source models need to be defined, e.g., for galaxy clusters or SNR?
    2. How will the observation simulator work?
    3. Simple models (a canned list of sources, or source maps, and spectra) vs. complex (i.e., with appropriate adjustable parameters)
