Fermi ToO 080603-1-1

A ToO observation to observe NOVA SCO 2016 at RA, Dec = 264.5805, -32.4191 (J2000) was approved at 2016-06-14 19:58:55 UTC.

The justification for the ToO is: A new nova, Sco 2016, was discovered over the weekend, and it would be excellent if Fermi could obtain a deep gamma-ray limit on it. This nova appears fairly typical--- it is toward the Galactic bulge, it is currently not unusually bright (R~ 11.4), and it shows typical velocities of a nova (FWHM ~ 1800 km/s). While many similar novae have not been detected by Fermi, some have (e.g., V1324 Sco (2012)). We are seeking to understand why some novae show gamma-rays while others do not. Deep limits from Fermi on all Galactic novae (~10 per year, on average) is crucial to answering this question.

The planned duration is 430.00 ks.

The autonomous request threshold during this ToO is LOW.

The ToO observation should begin between 2016-06-14 19:58:55 UTC and 2016-06-21 19:58:55 UTC.

The ToO observation was requested by PROF. LAURA CHOMIUK.
